Product upgrade, revision 6.10e
-------------------------------
InVircible is monitoring for modifications in the CMOS setup parameters
to insure that all changes to the hardware configuration reflect
properly in the rescue diskette. Especially important to monitor are
the changes to the hard disk setup parameters, stored in the CMOS.
The CMOS monitoring logic was modified to respond only to changes in
parameters connected with the hard drive(s), in order not to bother the
user with unimportant ones. At the same time, the option to restore the
setup parameters was removed from IVINIT and only the updating was
left. On-demand restoration of the CMOS parameters from backup can be
done as before, with ResQdisk, by pressing ^F3.
Version 6.10e has improved self protection from being attacked by a
path companion.
The revised IV printed manual was released concurrently with this
version. The printed manual is available from authorized IV agents.
January 1996
Product upgrade, revision 6.10d.
--------------------------------
Appendix H was added to the IV online manual. The new appendix covers
the details on techniques for the recovery of hard disks, using
ResQdisk and ResQpro (the professional version of ResQdisk). In the
working is a printed guide of ResQdisk Professional, for the user
interested in disk and data recovery.
The procedure for the preparation of the rescue diskette was improved
in this version. In former IV versions, the rescue procedure required
that the COMSPEC environment variable should point to drive C:. Also,
the procedure failed to run if the FILES variable in the config.sys had
less than 8 files (the DOS default is 2 files). The new procedure will
prompt the user to transfer the system files manually to the rescue
diskette in case the INSTALL/R procedure failed in transferring the
system. The new procedure covers special cases such as preparing a
rescue floppy using a Disk Manager 6.03+ boot floppy, or for preparing
the rescue when the COMSPEC resides on a network drive, etc.
Product upgrade, revision 6.10c.
--------------------------------
ResQpro partition sector editor. ResQdisk Professional (ResQpro) was
augmented with a partition sector editor. The ResQpro features are
visible in all modes (Sentry, regular license and Pro license), yet to
complete the operation and write the edited sector to disk you'll need
the ResQpro license. The ResQpro features are the reconstruction of the
mbr (^F4, ~F4) and the editing of a partition sector (Alt+M).
Win95 fixes:
IV had false piggybacking alarms in Windows 95. The bug was fixed.
The memory stealing message under Windows 95 is changed to an advisory
status. The message will stay on for a fixed time and the program will
continue without pausing. Memory stealing under Win 95 may indicate
either a nested boot, when an operating system is booted in a shell of
another OS, or a viral infection. IV usually provides additional
indications when the cause is viral.
A new option is provided for disabling the memory stealing test. IV's
memory alert threshold is set automatically at installation time. The
threshold is reset any time IV detects more available memory. If you
wish to disable the memory stealing alert then run (just once) IVINIT
or IVTEST with the /SKIPMEM switch. To re-enable the memory stealing
test just enter the INSTALL program and exit without doing anything.
IV Licensing Utility for System Administrators. InVircible runs in
organizations in either Sentry (most users) or fully authorized mode
(selected users). The system administrators can now authorize online a
remote user, from his master license floppy. The LICENSE utility is
available to purchasers of a site license through NetZ authorized
agents only.
The online manual can now be accessed directly from the IV menu shell.
When running the shell, press F2, or click the center button of the
mouse (for mice equipped with three buttons), or both buttons (if only
two) and the online manual hypertext will open. The manual is also
accessible through the online help, by pressing F6 when viewing the
help.
Removing IV. Selecting "Remove" from the main menu of the INSTALL
utility will now remove IV with all its related files from all the
local partitions and hard drives.
Product upgrade, revision 6.10b.
--------------------------------
FIXBOOT was upgraded to support Windows 95 system (boot) floppies.
Their bootability to Win95 is retained when processed with FIXBOOT. The
program was also upgraded to handle the special 1.68 Mbytes DMF format,
introduced by Microsoft in their Win95 installation floppies set.
IV4WIN95 rescue kit. The kit detects boot infectors and removes them
from your computer's hard disk before installing Win95. The Win 95
rescue kit also repairs boot virus damage to the Windows 95 setup
floppies, and provides for making a full backup of the installation
set. IV4WIN95.ZIP was released to the IV ftp sites and the major
networks.
Rescue diskette improvement: The rescue diskette procedure now creates
a text file named A:\HD_DATA.NTZ. The text file contains the CMOS
setup, as well as the IDE parameters of the two first installed hard
drives. You can read the parameters written to the HD_DATA file and
restore them in the CMOS in case of need. A utility named GET-HD was
added to the IV-UTILS.ZIP package. It will display the same hard drive
data as described above, on screen. These parameters may be asked for
in case you need help from the IV user's support.
Supporting MIRROR and IMAGE FAT backup utilities. IV's rescue supported
till now only MIRROR.COM, by copying it's complementary program
UNFORMAT.COM to the rescue floppy. From ver 6.10b, both Unformat.com
and Unformat.exe (from the Norton Utilities) will be copied to IV's
rescue. The latter will be renamed to UNFORMT!.EXE (on the rescue
floppy) not to confuse between the two. With this amendment either
MIRROR or IMAGE can be used as the FAT mirroring utility, in the
autoexec.
Repairing the mbr of Disk Manager dynamic partitions. The recovery from
boot virus damage to dynamic partitions configured with Disk Manager
presented a problem. Revision 6.10b contains several improvements in
this regard: the addition of the HD_DATA on the rescue diskette, the
GET-HD utility and the revision of appendix C of the online manual.
Restoring a damaged DM partition is now much easier, with significantly
higher chances to succeed.
Increased number of IVB exception files. The number of the files that
can be excluded from IVB's test was increased from five to ten. The
syntax of the excepted filenames was also relaxed. The former syntax
required that only the file name, no path, should be given after the
"SKIP=" prefix. Filename or pathname are now allowed in the exception
list.
Increased number of filespecs in IVB's checklist. The number of
additional filespecs to check by IVB was increased from five to ten.
There was was no specific reason for increasing that number, yet since
we increased the number of files in the exceptions list, it was easy to
increase the latter too. It's to the user if s/he uses this option.
Handling macros malware with InVircible. The tampering with template
files can be monitored by IVB as easily as the monitoring of changes to
executable files. To warn against the possible introduction of a prank
macro into a Winword template, just add "INCL=*.DOT" in the optional
checklist of IVB. Appendix G was added to the online manual of
InVircible. It explains how macro malware works, how to remove them and
how to protect your applications with IV from the introduction of this
kind of malware.
